The company designs, manufactures and markets the SBS system: a simple and reliable solution for in-process dynamic balancing of precision grinding machines. **Position Summary** The primary role of the Mechanical Engineer is application engineering: understanding what a customer needs and designing new parts and assemblies to create custom solutions. This includes making drawings to communicate with the customer and machinist, building prototypes for testing, and creating instructions and tooling for production. In addition to application engineering, this position is responsible for ongoing product improvement such as redesigning parts to improve performance and reduce costs, making fixtures, improving production processes, and solving problems as they appear. **Duties and Responsibilities** - Design and modify custom parts, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings using 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor) to meet specific customer and application requirements. - Apply appropriate dimensional tolerances to drawings with a thorough understanding of part fit, tolerance stack-up, GD&T, and the practical limits of manufacturing processes. - Read, interpret, and synthesize technical drawings, customer emails, reference images, and specifications to develop accurate engineering solutions. - Validate and verify mechanical designs utilizing simulation tools, hand calculations, and physical prototype testing. - Design and execute engineering experiments, systematically collecting and analyzing data to evaluate part performance and inform design decisions. - Build, test, and rework prototypes and custom production tooling utilizing hand tools, soldering irons, and shop equipment (including mills and lathes). - Drive continuous product and manufacturing improvement by designing custom fixtures, creating clear production instructions, and redesigning legacy parts for improved manufacturability and cost-efficiency. - Research, specify, and source off-the-shelf components, hardware, and tooling for integration into assemblies and production workflows. - Maintain engineering data integrity by organizing project files, managing part setups, and documenting revisions within company software and established guidelines. - Perform other related duties as assigned by management. **Qualifications** - Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. - Up to 3 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, academic projects, or part-time work. - Hands-on project experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment. - Proficiency with 3D CAD software for designing parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings. - Solid understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), particularly for traditional machining and FDM 3D printing processes. - Working knowledge of the scientific method, experimental design, data collection, and analytical evaluation. - Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, adapt to changing workflows, and meet deadlines. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to diverse audiences. **Preferred Skills** - Experience using Autodesk Inventor. - Practical experience with basic hand tools and shop equipment. - Manual machining experience, including milling and lathe operations. - Exposure to product development, prototyping, testing, or manufacturing process improvement projects. **Physical Demands and Work Environment** The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Precision grinding is a necessary step for nearly every manufacturing process. The Company’s SBS dynamic balancing systems can detect and dynamically correct vibration as low as 0.02 microns to ensure product quality. SBS acoustic emission sensors help grinding machine operators maximize the efficiency of the grinding process, thereby increasing part throughput and lowering operating costs. Originally a division of Schmitt Industries, Accretech SBS was acquired by Tosei in 2019. # Careers We look for motivated/self-driven problem-solvers to help us provide great products and service and continually grow our business.
