Civil drafter salary in 2025 is stuck to another job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a civil only drafter wage. Architectural and civil drafters are one occupation. The May 2025 median for that occupation was $66,150. The mean was $70,740. The median hourly wage in the wage release was $31.80, and the mean hourly wage was $34.01.
That is an uncomfortable fact for a job ad that says civil drafter and then lists Civil 3D, roadway corridors, and pipe networks. The work is real. The separate national median is not. This page describes the civil half of the code, uses the joint wage, and says when a higher number belongs to civil engineers instead.
Civil drawing is not architectural drawing
The handbook splits the duties even though it will not split the wage. Civil drafters prepare topographical maps used in construction and civil engineering projects, including highways, bridges, and dams. Architectural drafters draw structural features and details of buildings. Same code, different Tuesday.
On a posting, civil work shows up as alignments, surfaces, grading, utilities, and details for a contractor who has never opened a floor plan. The software is often Civil 3D, which sits on AutoCAD, or MicroStation and its civil tools. Sometimes it is a plain AutoCAD file with a company standard. AutoCAD salary 2025 explains why none of those products has a wage. They are how this occupation draws. The building side of the same code is covered in architectural drafter salary 2025.
The joint wage, and the engineer wage people paste over it
| What was measured | May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Architectural and civil drafters, median | $66,150 |
| Architectural and civil drafters, mean | $70,740 |
| All drafters, median | $68,090 |
| Drafters in construction, median | $70,640 |
| Civil engineering technicians, mean annual | $68,990 |
| Civil engineering technicians, median hourly | $31.23 |
| Civil engineers, median | $100,840 |
Civil engineers are the number that gets dropped into civil drafter articles by mistake. Their median was $100,840. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $68,240, close to the drafter median, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $163,220. The typical education is a bachelor degree. The work is planning, designing, and supervising construction, not only producing the drawing set.
Industry medians for civil engineers show how far a professional license and a design role can move pay, and also how far a construction title can fall. Federal government paid a median of $117,790. Local government paid $113,640. State government paid $102,440. Engineering services paid $100,620. Nonresidential building construction paid $82,400. That last figure is still well above the drafter median, and it is still an engineer wage. Do not hand it to a drafter offer and call it a civil CAD adjustment.
Civil engineering technologists and technicians are a third group. The May 2025 wage release gives them a mean of $68,990 and a median hourly wage of $31.23, with about 68,520 jobs. A technician who tests materials or supports a field crew is not a drafter. A CAD technician title on a civil team can fall in either place. If the day is drawings, stay with $66,150. If the day is inspection support and lab data, the technician mean is the closer official average, and it is a mean, not a median annual wage.
Why the shared code still matters for hiring
About 104,100 people were in the architectural and civil drafter group in 2025. It is the biggest drafter group by far. Mechanical drafters were about 42,100. Electrical and electronics drafters were about 18,900. The joint median is therefore the wage of a large workforce, not a thin sample. The problem is mixture, not noise. Building drafters and highway drafters are averaged together.
Employment of the combined group is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, to about 109,500. The bureau says these drafters are used earlier in design than other drafting specialties, so productivity software does not thin them as fast. Civil work also follows public infrastructure. The civil engineer projection, which is a different occupation, expects 6 percent growth and cites bridges, roads, water systems, and the repair of older structures. That demand can raise drafter hiring without changing the fact that the drafter wage is published only as a pair.
What a careful comparison looks like
For production civil drawings, start at $66,150. If the employer is a contractor, the all drafter construction median of $70,640 is the only published industry clue, and it includes architectural and other drafters. If the posting wants a bachelor degree, design calculations, or a professional engineer seal, stop using the drafter table and read design engineer salary 2025 with the civil engineer median in front of you.
Private salary sites sometimes print a Civil 3D wage with a narrow band. They are estimating a job title the statistical agency refused to separate. A narrow band is a sign the model is confident, not a sign the underlying jobs are alike. This guide would rather show the joint median, name the mix, and let a local offer sit somewhere honest around it.
