Mechanical drafter salary in 2025 is one of the few CAD titles with its own line in the U.S. wage tables. The median was $71,550 in May 2025. The mean was $75,060. Among drafter groups, only electrical and electronics drafters had a higher median, at $76,870. Architectural and civil drafters were at $66,150.
The handbook counted about 42,100 mechanical drafters in 2025. The wage release, which does not round the same way, counted about 39,960 and put the median hourly wage at $34.40. Both describe the same occupation in the same month. Use the annual median of $71,550 when someone asks what the job pays. Use the mean only when you want the average, and say that you mean the average.
What mechanical drafters actually draw
The bureau says mechanical drafters prepare layouts that show the details of machinery, mechanical tools, and devices, including medical equipment. The layouts indicate dimensions, fastening methods, and other requirements for assembly. Some of these drafters create production molds.
That is shop and product work more than building work. A person routing ductwork in a hospital model may be an HVAC drafter on the business card and a mechanical drafter, or a drafter in the leftover group, in the survey. The tables do not publish an HVAC wage. If the drawings are machines, tools, parts, and assemblies, this median is the one the government recognizes.
The tools on the requisition are usually SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or NX. Sometimes the drawing set is still AutoCAD. None of those names has a wage column. The technician row is easy to misuse. Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians are not drafters. The wage release gives them a mean of $76,380 and a median hourly wage of $35.82, on employment of about 36,190. Mechanical engineers are the step that changes the number. Their May 2025 median was $104,110. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $73,990, which is only a little above the drafter median, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $164,340. A mechanical designer title often tries to live in the gap between $71,550 and $104,110. That gap is real in job ads. It is not a published wage. Industry, without pretending the drafter table has one
The handbook publishes industry medians for drafters as a whole, not for mechanical drafters alone. For all drafters, manufacturing paid a median of $65,370 and architectural and engineering services paid $68,090. Manufacturing is where a large share of mechanical drawing happens, and that all drafter manufacturing figure is below the mechanical drafter median. Both can be true. The specialty median is national. The industry median mixes architectural, civil, electrical, and mechanical drafters.
For mechanical engineers, the industry cuts are published, and they are a useful ceiling rather than a drafter wage. Scientific research and development services paid a median of $132,040. Computer and electronic product manufacturing paid $106,870. Transportation equipment manufacturing paid $105,560. Architectural and engineering services paid $103,440. Machinery manufacturing paid $98,620. A drafter who moves into a degreed engineering job in a machinery plant is not walking into the research median. The machinery figure is the sober one.
Headcount is projected to fall
Employment of mechanical drafters is projected to decline 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, from about 42,100 jobs to about 39,600. The bureau's reason is the same one it gives for drafters generally. CAD and BIM let one person finish more drawing, and engineers take back tasks that used to be delegated.
A declining projection is about positions, not about the wage in a given year. The May 2025 median can be solid while the occupation slowly shrinks. Openings continue when people retire or change fields. They are just not, in this specialty, coming from a larger profession.
Compare that with architectural and civil drafters, who are projected to grow 5 percent. Mechanical drawing is the group under more pressure from modeling tools inside engineering departments. If a company posts a mechanical drafter role and a mechanical engineer role for the same product, the long run bet in the projection is that more of the geometry stays with the engineer.
How to judge an offer
An offer near $71,550 is the middle of this occupation in May 2025, not a compliment and not an insult. The all drafter bottom tenth, under $46,700, and the all drafter top tenth, over $102,590, are the only published tenths that include mechanical drafters, and they include everyone else too. The survey does not print a mechanical only tenth.
Ask what the drawings are, who signs them, and whether the job includes toolpaths, tests, or supervision.
