The CAD drafter salary in 2025 has a clean official answer in the United States, which is rarer than the job ads suggest. The median annual wage for drafters was $68,090 in May 2025, equal to $32.74 an hour. Half of drafters earned more than that. Half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,700, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $102,590.

That median sits above the median for all occupations, which was $50,980, and below the median for engineers as a group, which was $108,620. Drafters are not a cheap version of engineers in the tables. They are a different occupation, with a different education line and a different spread of pay.

What the survey means by drafter

The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes drafters as people who use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings. The drawings carry dimensions, materials, and the procedures for building the thing. Some employers still say CAD operator. The bureau treats that as the same work.

The duties it lists are practical. Drafters design plans in computer aided design software. They work from rough sketches and specifications. They add detail from a knowledge of how buildings or products go together. They specify dimensions and materials. They usually work under an engineer or an architect.

The handbook also says the drawings can go into building information modeling systems, and that three dimensional models let the team see whether the parts fit. BIM is already inside the drafter description. It is not, by itself, a reason to leave this wage table. Coordinators and managers are a different argument, and they have their own guides.

The four groups inside the median

The $68,090 figure covers everyone the bureau calls a drafter. The groups do not earn the same amount.

GroupMedian, May 2025Mean, May 2025Jobs in 2025
Electrical and electronics drafters$76,870$81,28018,900
Mechanical drafters$71,550$75,06042,100
Architectural and civil drafters$66,150$70,740104,100
Drafters, all other$63,520$68,25015,200
Drafters, all$68,090$72,590180,200

Means come from the May 2025 wage release, which counts a slightly tighter employment total for drafters, about 176,060, because the handbook rounds. Medians and the job counts in the table are the handbook figures. The mean sits above the median in every row because higher wages pull an average up. If a recruiter quotes a mean and calls it typical pay, they have changed the statistic.

Architectural and civil drafters are the large group, which is why the all drafter median is closer to $66,150 than to the electrical median. A mechanical shop that quotes the all drafter number is aiming low for its own specialty. An architectural studio that quotes the electrical number is aiming high.

Where drafters work, and what those industries pay

About 49 percent of drafters work in architectural, engineering, and related services. Manufacturing employs about 21 percent. Construction employs about 13 percent. Administrative and support services employ about 2 percent, which is the bucket for a lot of contract and staffing placements.

The May 2025 medians in those industries were $68,090 in architectural and engineering services, $65,370 in manufacturing, $70,640 in construction, and $61,360 in administrative and support services. Construction paid the most of the four. The staffing bucket paid the least. A contract drafter placed through a support firm can be doing the same drawings as a direct hire next door and still sit in the lower cell, because the survey follows the employer of record.

Most drafters work full time. Some work more than 40 hours. The handbook does not publish a remote split, so a work from home offer is not a separate official wage.

How people get the job

The typical entry education is an associate degree, often an associate of applied science in drafting, or a shorter certificate or diploma from a community college or technical school. Programs teach design fundamentals, sketching, and CAD software. The handbook says a full time associate degree generally takes about two years. It does not list required experience in a prior occupation, and it does not list a formal apprenticeship.

Certification is optional. The handbook says it can show competence in architectural, civil, or mechanical drafting, and that it is not mandatory. A license is the architect's or the engineer's problem, not the drafter's, unless the person is also stamping work. If the posting asks for a stamp, you have left this occupation.

The outlook is quiet, and the openings are not

Employment of drafters is projected to grow 1 percent from 2025 to 2035, from about 180,200 jobs to about 181,400. That is slower than the 3 percent projected for all occupations. The bureau expects CAD and BIM to keep raising how much drawing one person can finish, and it expects engineers and architects to keep absorbing tasks that used to be handed to a drafter.

The same projection still expects about 14,400 openings a year. Most of those openings replace people who change careers or retire. A slow growth rate is not a closed door. It is a trade where the headcount barely rises and the chairs still turn over.

The direction depends on the specialty. Architectural and civil drafters are projected to grow 5 percent. Electrical and electronics drafters are projected to fall 3 percent. Mechanical drafters are projected to fall 6 percent. Drafters in the leftover group are projected to fall 7 percent. The all drafter figure hides that split. The specialty guides do not.

What to compare an offer with

Start with the specialty median, not the all drafter median, if you know the discipline. Then look at the industry cut if your employer is in construction, manufacturing, a design consultancy, or a staffing firm. Then remember the tenths. An offer under $46,700 is in the bottom tenth of the whole drafter workforce, not merely a bit below average. An offer above $102,590 is in the top tenth.

Do not add a software bonus the survey did not measure. AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, and MicroStation show up on drafter postings every day. They do not have wages of their own. If the work is production drawings, this page is the right anchor. If the work is design decisions, analysis, or management, move to CAD designer salary 2025 or design engineer salary 2025 and read the difference on purpose. The short version of that argument is CAD drafter vs designer salary 2025.
