CAD pay in 2025 is a set of occupations, not one average. In the United States the median wage for drafters was $68,090 in May 2025. Mechanical engineers, who often sit in the same office and use the same models, had a median of $104,110. Architectural and engineering managers had a median of $171,270. If a web page offers a single CAD salary, it has already mixed those jobs together.

This guide is the map for the rest of the section. Each article names the survey, the month or pay period, and the occupation the number actually covers. Where a popular title has no official line, the article says so and points at the nearest occupations instead of inventing a range.

The title on the posting is not the title in the survey

Statistical agencies sort workers with occupation codes. Employers sort them with whatever words filled the requisition. Drafter, technician, designer, design engineer, BIM coordinator, and CAD manager can describe four different levels of responsibility or one person whose manager likes a grander title.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is blunt about drafters. They use software to turn the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings. They work from sketches and specifications. They add dimensions, materials, and procedures. The typical entry education is an associate degree. That is the $68,090 job.

A designer posting usually asks that person to decide more of the geometry. A design engineer posting usually asks for a bachelor degree and for calculations, not only a model. A manager posting asks someone to run people, standards, or a department. The wage tables follow that ladder. The software brand on the requisition does not get a column of its own.

How to read the number

The median is the middle. Half of the workers in that occupation earned more, and half earned less. It is not a target your employer owes you, and it is not the wage of a typical new hire. The mean is the arithmetic average. A cluster of very high wages pulls it above the median, which is why drafters show a mean of $72,590 beside the $68,090 median in the May 2025 wage release.

A tenth is more useful than a fake precision to the dollar. For all U.S. drafters, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,700 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $102,590. That spread is the country, every specialty, and every industry in one occupation. It is wide because the job is wide.

Industry cuts, when the handbook publishes them, are medians too. Drafters in construction had a median of $70,640. Architectural and engineering services, which employ about 49 percent of drafters, sat on the overall median of $68,090. Manufacturing was $65,370. Administrative and support services were $61,360. The same job title in a different industry is a different offer.

The U.S. ladder in May 2025

OccupationMedian annual wage
All occupations$50,980
Drafters$68,090
Architectural and civil drafters$66,150
Mechanical drafters$71,550
Electrical and electronics drafters$76,870
Architects, except landscape and naval$99,280
Civil engineers$100,840
Mechanical engineers$104,110
Engineers, as a group$108,620
Electrical engineers$120,630
Aerospace engineers$134,960
Architectural and engineering managers$171,270

Two details matter before anyone treats that table as a career plan. Architectural and civil drafters are one code, so the civil page cannot honestly split them. Architectural and engineering managers include directors of entire departments. Quoting $171,270 as a CAD manager salary is how salary roundups go wrong. The US CAD salary 2025 piece walks the same ladder more slowly.

Other countries publish different jobs

You cannot convert these medians by an exchange rate and call the result a local salary. The occupation boundaries change.

In the United Kingdom, the provisional Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings for April 2025 has a code that actually says CAD: CAD, drawing and architectural technicians. The full time median was £35,221. The all employee median, which includes part time jobs, was £34,465. Full time engineering technicians were higher, at £44,843, and full time mechanical engineers were £51,110. The national full time median in that survey release was £39,039, so the CAD technician figure sits below the middle of full time pay in Britain. Details are in UK CAD salary 2025.

Canada publishes an hourly wage, not a yearly salary. Job Bank, updated on 19 November 2025, puts drafting technologists and technicians at a national median of $31.79 an hour for the 2023 to 2024 period. Alberta's median in the Labour Force Survey rows was $36.00. Quebec's was $29.81. See Canada CAD salary 2025.

Australia splits civil and mechanical, and then mixes draftspersons with technicians inside each code. In the May 2025 earnings survey the full time median was $1,730 a week for the civil group and $2,589 a week for the mechanical group. The all occupation weekly median was $1,852. That gap is the story, and it is told in Australia CAD salary 2025.

What these guides will not pretend to know

There is no official AutoCAD wage, SolidWorks wage, Revit wage, or CATIA wage. People get hired because of those tools. The surveys still classify the work. A mechanical drafter in SolidWorks and a mechanical drafter in Inventor are in the same cell. Saying otherwise would mean borrowing a number from a private calculator that does not show who answered.

Experience bands are the same problem. The U.S. handbook does not publish drafter pay by years on the job. The bottom tenth is not a starting salary. The top tenth is not a senior designer schedule. Entry level CAD salary 2025 stays inside what was actually published.

Remote work is unpublished too. The national drafter median does not say whether the worker was at home, on a site, or in a cubicle. An offer that adjusts for the employer's city is using a rule the survey does not print.

How to use a guide on a real offer

Read the daily work before the title. If the job is production drawings from someone else's sketches, start with the drafter median for that specialty. If the job is analysis, a degree, and a stamp, start with the engineer median for that discipline. If the job is standards, templates, and hiring, do not jump straight to the engineering manager median unless the scope really is a department.

Then look at industry. Research and development pays mechanical engineers a median of $132,040. Machinery manufacturing pays them $98,620. Both numbers are May 2025, and both are engineers, not drafters. The specialty pages link the industry cuts that exist and stay quiet where the table is blank.

Employment growth is a separate question from pay. Drafter employment in the United States is projected to rise only 1 percent from 2025 to 2035, while the handbook still expects about 14,400 openings a year because people leave. Architectural and civil drafters are the group projected to grow, at 5 percent. Mechanical drafters are projected to fall 6 percent. A rising wage and a shrinking headcount can happen in the same year. The guides keep those facts apart.
