Mechanical designer salary in 2025 is a gap between two official jobs. Mechanical drafters had a May 2025 median of $71,550. Mechanical engineers had a median of $104,110. Employers use designer for people who are expected to do more than trace a layout and less than stamp a calculation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics never named that middle job, so it never priced it.
The useful move is to learn both ends well enough that an offer has to explain itself. A number plucked from a SolidWorks calculator usually sits in this gap and pretends the gap has been measured. It has not.
The drafter end
Mechanical drafters prepare layouts of machinery, tools, and devices. The layouts show dimensions, fastening methods, and what assembly requires. Some create production molds. The mean wage in May 2025 was $75,060, a bit above the $71,550 median. About 42,100 people were in the handbook count.
That is the right floor when the designer title is mostly documentation of parts someone else conceived. It is also the right floor when the tools are SolidWorks, Inventor, or NX and the output is a drawing package. Those brands do not have wages. Employment of mechanical drafters is projected to fall 6 percent from 2025 to 2035. The bureau expects modeling tools and engineers to absorb drawing work. A designer title can be a company's way of keeping geometry with a non licensed person as that shift happens. The title change does not create a new median.
The engineer end
Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal devices. The typical education is a bachelor degree. The May 2025 median was $104,110, or $50.05 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $73,990. The highest 10 percent earned more than $164,340. About 298,500 jobs were counted, and employment is projected to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average.
The bottom tenth of engineers and the median of drafters nearly touch. Less than $73,990 on the engineer side, $71,550 in the middle of the drafter side. A junior engineer and a well paid drafter can hand each other almost the same number. That overlap is why designer feels like a real category in the office and like a fiction in the table. The middle of each occupation is still about $32,000 apart.

These are engineer wages. They are here so a mechanical designer in a machinery plant does not quote a research lab. Machinery manufacturing is the low cell among the published engineer industries, and it is still far above the drafter median. Architectural and engineering services, the consultancy world, sits near the national engineer median.
CAM, piping, and other cousins
A mechanical designer who also programs the machine tool is edging into computer numerically controlled tool programmers, whose median was $68,120. Piping designers in plants often come from the same mechanical drafting tradition. They do not have a code. The anchor remains $71,550, with drafters in the leftover group at $63,520 if the work is too specialized to call mechanical layout. How to place an offer inside the gap
List the decisions. If another person supplies the concept and the designer documents it, the drafter median is the comparison, and a designer title is marketing. If the designer chooses arrangements, clearances, and materials, and an engineer still checks the analysis, the offer should beat $71,550 by enough to reflect that, and it should not need to reach $104,110 to be serious. If the designer runs the analysis, the engineer median is the comparison even when the business card avoids the word engineer.
Ask about the industry cell before arguing about the title. A machinery manufacturer and a research group are not having the same conversation. Ask whether the role is replacing a drafter the projection expects to disappear into the engineering job. Companies sometimes raise the title and hold the drafter wage. The tables will not stop them. They will make the hold visible.
