CAD manager salary in 2025 is where official statistics are easiest to abuse. Architectural and engineering managers had a May 2025 median of $171,270, or $82.34 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $120,810. The highest 10 percent earned more than $262,760. About 220,900 people were in the occupation. It is the wrong headline for a person who maintains templates, licenses, and a plotting standard, unless that person also runs an engineering department.

The handbook says these managers plan, direct, and coordinate activities in architecture and engineering. The typical education is a bachelor degree. Many come up from engineer or architect jobs. A CAD manager in a twenty person fabrication shop is doing a narrower job. Paying that person as if they were the median of this occupation would be generous. Quoting the median as if it were the market rate is not research.

What the manager median is made of

Architectural and engineering managers, May 2025Median
All industries$171,270
Scientific research and development services$211,450
Management of companies and enterprises$181,720
Manufacturing$169,690
Architectural and engineering services$168,410
Government, excluding education and hospitals$159,930

Even the lowest of those industry medians, government at $159,930, is an executive technical wage. Research and development at $211,450 is another world. The bottom tenth of the whole occupation, under $120,810, is still above the top tenth of drafters, who earned more than $102,590. The entire published manager distribution sits on top of ordinary drawing pay. That is what department leadership costs in the survey. It is not what software administration costs.

Closer comparisons for a CAD manager who is not a director

Drafters had a median of $68,090. Architects had a median of $99,280. Mechanical engineers had a median of $104,110. A manager who supervises drafters, writes the CAD standard, and still produces some drawings is being compared, by any careful reader, with the people they supervise and with the top of the drafter range. Clearing $102,590 means beating 90 percent of drafters. It does not mean approaching $171,270.

Architects in architectural and engineering services had a median of $98,440. Engineering managers in that same industry had $168,410. The consultancy that employs both is the cleanest picture of the gap. One median is professional design. The other is management of those professionals. A CAD manager title in that firm might be either a senior technical role or a true manager. The offer should say which, because the published numbers will not.

BIM managers run into the same problem, often with Revit standards instead of a general CAD manual. BIM manager salary 2025 uses this same caution and then talks about project standards versus company standards. CAD designer salary 2025 is the individual contributor page. If the manager role has slid back into production, that is the page to reopen.

Growth in the manager job follows the engineers, not the drafters

Employment of architectural and engineering managers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, about in line with other management occupations and faster than the 3 percent projected for all jobs. The handbook ties that growth to demand for civil work, grid updates, and the engineers those managers direct. It expects about 14,900 openings a year, mostly from replacement.

Drafter employment is projected to grow only 1 percent. A company can add an engineering manager and reduce drafters in the same decade. A CAD manager whose value was supervising a large drafting room is exposed to that arithmetic. A CAD manager whose value is the standard, the data, and the link between design and manufacturing is doing work the projection does not measure separately. Pay for that work is negotiated. It is not in a cell labeled CAD.

How to read a CAD manager offer

Count the people, the budget, and the decisions. Hiring and firing, a department budget, and responsibility for project delivery are manager work in the sense of this survey, and even then $171,270 is the middle of a broad occupation, not a starting manager wage. The bottom tenth is under $120,810, which is the figure to remember before anyone treats $171,270 as the floor.

A role that is licenses, templates, training, and support, with no staff or with one assistant, should be argued from drafter, designer, and engineer medians. It can pay more than the people on the tools. It does not inherit the research and development manager median of $211,450 by adding the word manager to a requisition.

Most of these managers work full time, and more than 40 hours is common when deadlines hit. The survey wage is not an hourly quote you can multiply by unpaid evenings. If the offer is salaried and the week is long, compare annual figures with annual figures and leave the $82.34 hourly median for people whose hours match the survey assumption.
