Entry level CAD salary in 2025 is the question the surveys refuse to answer directly. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish drafter wages by years of experience. It publishes a distribution for everyone in the occupation. In May 2025 the median was $68,090. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,700. The highest 10 percent earned more than $102,590. The bottom tenth is the closest official fact to a starting wage, and it is not a starting wage. It is the bottom of a workforce that includes every age and every specialty.
What a new drafter is expected to bring
The handbook says the typical entry education is an associate degree, often in drafting or a related field, from a community college or technical school. A certificate or diploma can also be the route. Full time study for the associate degree generally takes about two years. Programs cover design fundamentals, sketching, and CAD software. The handbook lists no required experience in a related occupation and no formal period of on the job training before someone counts as a drafter.
That profile matters. This is not an apprenticeship wage scale the government prints in steps. A graduate can be hired into the occupation immediately. Certification in architectural, civil, or mechanical drafting exists and is not required. High school math, science, and drafting classes are preparation, not a substitute the handbook treats as the usual path.
Employers still prefer a portfolio and a software name. The survey does not pay AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks as separate entry wages. It pays drafters. CAD drafter salary 2025 is the parent page. The specialty medians below are the better floors if you know the discipline.
The bottom of the range is not one job
| May 2025 | Wage |
|---|---|
| Lowest 10 percent of all drafters | Under $46,700 |
| Drafters, all other, median | $63,520 |
| Architectural and civil drafters, median | $66,150 |
| All drafters, median | $68,090 |
| Drafters in administrative and support services, median | $61,360 |
| Mechanical drafters, median | $71,550 |
| Electrical and electronics drafters, median | $76,870 |
| All occupations, median | $50,980 |
An offer under $46,700 is in the bottom tenth of all drafters in the country. That can be a first job in a low paying region. It can also be a poor offer to an experienced drafter. The statistic cannot tell those apart. An offer near $50,980 merely matches the median of all jobs in the economy, not the median of this occupation. Drafters as a group are paid more than the economy wide middle.
Specialty changes what "entry" should be compared with. Electrical and electronics drafters have a median $10,000 above architectural and civil drafters. A new electrical drafter aimed at $66,150 is being compared with a different group. A new architectural drafter aimed at $76,870 is borrowing the electrical median. Staffing firms are the other published clue. Drafters in administrative and support services had a median of $61,360. A first placement through an agency can land in that lower industry cell even when the drawings look like everyone else's.
Britain publishes a lower tenth for the CAD title
The UK provisional survey for April 2025 is more literal about the title. Full time CAD, drawing and architectural technicians had a median of £35,221. The lowest tenth earned £24,108. The lower quartile was £29,500. That lowest tenth has the same limitation as the American one. It is not labeled entry level. It is the bottom of the full time occupation, and it is the cleanest official floor with CAD in the occupation name. Details and the engineer comparison are in UK CAD salary 2025 and CAD technician salary 2025.
Openings exist because people leave
U.S. drafter employment is projected to grow only 1 percent from 2025 to 2035. The handbook still expects about 14,400 openings a year, on average, mostly to replace drafters who transfer to other work or retire. Entry level hiring is that replacement flow more than it is new seats. Architectural and civil drafters are projected to grow 5 percent. Mechanical drafters are projected to fall 6 percent. A new mechanical drafter is entering a specialty the bureau expects to shrink, which affects competition more than it sets the May 2025 median.
Designer and engineer titles are a different entry. Mechanical engineers had a lowest tenth under $73,990 and a median of $104,110, and they typically need a bachelor degree. A new graduate engineer can be paid more than a new drafter and still be in the bottom of the engineer distribution. CAD drafter vs designer salary 2025 is the title problem. Do not use a designer average as an entry drafter target.
How to talk about a first offer
Compare it with the specialty median and with the all drafter bottom tenth, and say what you are doing. Under $46,700 is low for the occupation as the government measured it in May 2025. Near the specialty median is strong for a first job and ordinary for the workforce as a whole, which includes people with long experience. The survey will not give you a two year wage. Anyone who prints one has left the official tables.
