Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity. Amazon Leo is seeking a Manufacturing Tooling & Test Equipment Design Engineer to design, develop, and deploy manufacturing tools, test fixtures, and specialized equipment supporting the development, qualification, and production of satellite battery systems and electronic assemblies. This role owns the end-to-end development of mechanical tooling and test equipment for PCBA, battery pack, and component-level assembly and testing. The engineer will translate engineering and manufacturing requirements into robust, repeatable, and scalable solutions that improve production throughput, quality, safety, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical design fundamentals, hands-on prototyping and fabrication experience, and a demonstrated ability to transition custom engineering setups into reliable production-ready equipment. Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. Key job responsibilities - Define hardware requirements and specifications, design components and sub-systems using computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation tools, and validate designs through rigorous prototyping and testing to optimize performance, cost, and reliability. - Lead larger projects by breaking complex systems into sub-components, coordinating parallel development efforts across your team, and reassembling them into a cohesive and well-integrated design. - Create comprehensive test plans that thoroughly validate hardware designs, address system integration challenges, and incorporate failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to ensure product reliability. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams, vendors, and manufacturing partners to negotiate fabrication approaches, select appropriate materials and components, and drive products from prototype through production readiness. - Mentor and coach junior engineers, contribute to design reviews that improve product delivery, and establish best practices for operational excellence, quality, and safety across your organization. ## Basic qualifications - Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures - Experience in manufacturing, process, or industrial engineering - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience. - Experience designing mechanical fixtures, manufacturing tooling, automated equipment, or test setups for engineering development or production environments. - Proficiency in 3D CAD Siemens NX or similar including engineering drawings, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis. - Hands-on experience with mechanical fabrication, machining, assembly, prototyping, and equipment troubleshooting. - Knowledge of manufacturing processes, mechanical mechanisms, materials selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA/DFT). - Experience working with multidisciplinary teams to develop and deploy manufacturing or test equipment. - Experience with mechanical testing such as Vibe, Shock, PPR, Nail Pen etc ## Preferred qualifications - Proficiency in Siemens NX - Experience designing manufacturing and test tooling for PCBAs, electronic assemblies, battery packs, or other complex electromechanical products. - Experience transitioning prototype tooling into production equipment, including equipment qualification, process capability, and production ramp-up. - Familiarity with automated assembly systems, robotics, pneumatic actuators, sensors, motion control, and electrical or mechanical equipment integration. - Experience with precision fixtures, electrical test interfaces, connector mating, environmental testing, and high-reliability manufacturing. - Understanding of measurement system analysis (MSA), equipment repeatability, tolerance management, and statistical process control (SPC). - Experience developing equipment with appropriate safety features, ESD protection, ergonomics, serviceability, and operator-focused design. - Experience in aerospace, automotive, battery manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, or other high-reliability production environments.
