The Senior Structural Drafter produces complete, coordinated structural drawing sets for wood framed construction projects with minimal day-to-day guidance. The role translates the Structural Engineer's design criteria, sketches, calculations, markups, and technical direction into clear and accurate construction documents. The drafter independently manages drawing production while structural engineering decisions and final technical approval remain with the Structural Engineer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently organizes and produces complete structural drawing sets in appropriate software, from initial project setup through engineer-reviewed final deliverables, with minimal day-to-day drafting guidance.
Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing foundation plans, floor and roof framing plans, structural sections, connection details, schedules, and general notes for single-family residential wood-frame structures in accordance with the Structural Engineer's design requirements. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Interprets architectural plans, engineering sketches, calculations, technical reports, and redlines to develop coordinated structural drawings; identifies missing information and obtains clarification rather than relying on step-by-step drafting instructions.
Coordinates structural drawings and models with architectural backgrounds and other disciplines; checks dimensions, elevations, openings, framing layouts, and detail references and brings unresolved conflicts to the Structural Engineer.
Proactively identifies drawing discrepancies, incomplete details, constructability concerns, and changes affecting project scope or schedule; resolves drafting issues within the role's expertise and promptly escalates engineering questions.
Performs thorough drawing self-checks before engineering review, verifying completeness, dimensions, annotations, schedules, section and detail references, and consistency among plans and details.
Maintains organized CAD files, Revit models, linked backgrounds, sheet layouts, and revision records; incorporates review comments and project changes consistently throughout each drawing set.
Applies and helps improve company drafting standards, templates, and detail libraries and provides technical drafting guidance to less-experienced team members as needed.
Manages drafting workload and communicates progress, priorities, and information needs to meet agreed schedules, budgets, and quality standards while coordinating with the Structural Engineer for design direction and final review.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Minimum of 10 years of professional structural drafting experience, including substantial experience preparing complete construction drawing sets for single-family residential wood-frame projects.
Demonstrated ability to take a project from architectural backgrounds and engineering direction to a complete, coordinated structural drawing set with minimal supervision, rather than solely performing redline drafting.
Strong practical knowledge of single-family residential wood-frame construction, including foundations, floor and roof systems, beams, headers, posts, bearing walls, shear wall detailing, structural connections, and the documented structural load path.
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit for structural documentation, including project and sheet setup, external references or linked models, view creation, annotation, detailing, schedules, and production of consistent drawing packages.
Familiarity with residential construction documents, applicable building code terminology, structural detailing conventions, and project-specific requirements established by the Structural Engineer.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMPETENCIES
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate coordination issues, ask focused technical questions, and collaborate effectively with engineers and other project team members.
Strong attention to detail and accountability for the accuracy, completeness, quality, and timeliness of deliverables.
Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, adapt to revisions, and meet fast-paced deadlines without sacrificing drawing quality.
Sound judgment regarding when to work independently and when to seek engineering input.
Ability to identify discrepancies, incomplete details, constructability concerns, and coordination conflicts and escalate unresolved engineering questions promptly.
Ability to organize and maintain CAD files, Revit models, linked backgrounds, sheet layouts, schedules, revision records, drafting standards, templates, and detail libraries.
Professional and collaborative approach to working with Structural Engineers and other project team members.
Ability to provide technical drafting guidance to less experienced team members as needed.
