ROLE SUMMARY/PURPOSE:
As the CAD Specialist, you will support and advance the productivity, efficiency, and technical capabilities of Locke's CAD department. This role goes beyond traditional CAD drafting. You will be both a skilled CAD professional and a forward-thinking problem solver who finds ways to improve engineering processes, develop innovative tools, and implement technology solutions that make the engineering team more efficient and effective. Working closely with engineering leadership, design engineers, and drafting personnel, you will establish standards, streamline workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and develop systems that improve the quality, consistency, and speed of engineering deliverables. Success in this role is demonstrated through higher productivity, fewer errors and less rework, consistent standards, and practical tools the engineering team uses every day. Ultimately, you will help build a more efficient, standardized, and technology-driven engineering department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Prepare, modify, and maintain detailed engineering drawings and construction documents, and support engineers with drafting, detailing, and development of plans and specifications.
· Maintain drawing accuracy, consistency, and compliance with engineering standards, and review drawings for clarity, consistency, and constructability.
· Provide technical CAD support to engineering personnel, including troubleshooting software and workflow issues.
· Evaluate existing engineering and drafting workflows to find inefficiencies, and develop and implement standardized CAD practices, templates, libraries, and drawing procedures.
· Identify repetitive tasks and develop solutions that reduce manual effort, reduce errors, and streamline the engineering design process.
· Work with engineering leadership to identify, prioritize, and implement department-wide process improvements, and measure their effectiveness.
· Architect, develop, and implement custom tools, CAD automation, scripts, and workflows, including tools that connect engineering calculations, design, CAD production, and documentation.
· Explore and implement new technologies, including AI-assisted workflows, programming, and engineering software integrations, and evaluate emerging software that could give the engineering department an advantage.
· Establish and maintain CAD standards, drawing templates, detail libraries, CAD blocks, standard notes, and design references.
· Document tools, processes, and procedures for long-term use, and train and support engineering personnel on CAD systems and productivity resources.
SUCCESSFUL RESULTS:
Key Result Area #1 - CAD Production and Technical Support:
Successful Result: Deliver accurate, consistent, and constructable drawings and construction documents, with fewer errors and less rework.
· Prepare, modify, and maintain engineering drawings in line with established standards.
· Support engineers with drafting, detailing, and troubleshooting software and workflow issues.
· Review drawings to improve clarity, consistency, and constructability.
Key Result Area #2 - Engineering Process Improvement:
· Evaluate drafting and engineering workflows, and standardize CAD practices, templates, libraries, and procedures.
· Work with engineering leadership to prioritize and implement department-wide improvements.
· Measure the results of improvements and keep looking for ways to advance.
Key Result Area #3 - Engineering Technology and Tool Development:
· Build custom tools, scripts, and automation that reduce repetitive drafting and design tasks and connect calculations, design, CAD production, and documentation.
· Explore and implement new technologies, including AI-assisted workflows and software integrations.
· Create practical, user-friendly calculators, libraries, and applications that simplify complex or repetitive work.
Key Result Area #4 - Standards, Systems, and Knowledge Management:
· Establish and maintain CAD standards, templates, detail libraries, and shared engineering resources.
· Document tools, processes, and procedures to support long-term use and knowledge transfer.
· Train and support engineering personnel in using CAD systems, tools, and productivity resources.
REQUIREMENTS:
· Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and/or other relevant CAD platforms.
· 7+ years of CAD drafting experience, including demonstrated experience producing detailed engineering drawings and construction documents.
· Strong understanding of drafting standards, drawing organization, and engineering documentation.
· Experience developing CAD standards, templates, automation, or productivity tools is highly desirable.
· Experience with programming, scripting, APIs, or software development (such as AutoLISP, Python, .NET, VBA, or similar technologies) is a significant advantage.
· Experience with engineering software integration, databases, or custom application development is a plus.
· Strong computer skills and an interest in emerging technologies.
